Man fishing from his wheelchair being assistedOn South Padre Island, fishing is more than just a pastime, it’s a part of us—a way to connect with nature, family, and friends. Today, that tradition has an even richer meaning with the ICAN boat. This revolutionary vessel ensures everyone, regardless of mobility differences, has an opportunity to cast their line and create lasting memories on the beautiful waters of the Laguna Madre Bay.

Spearheaded by lifelong angler and retired educator Shane Wilson, the ICAN initiative under the nonprofit Fishing’s Future is transforming how visitors experience our legendary bay. Recognizing that traditional sportfishing was mainly out of reach for wheelchair users, Wilson set out determined to bridge that gap. Working with engineers Bill Hoenes and Russell Davidson, Wilson transformed a used 26-foot tritoon boat into a state-of-the-art, accessible fishing vessel. Every detail, from wheelchair tie-downs and an open floor plan to raised railings and a specialized, retractable lift, show that the ICAN was designed to offer not only safety, but comfort and independence. This lift is a symbol of possibility, allowing passengers to lower themselves into the water and enjoy a swim, an experience that many previously thought unattainable.

One of the most heartwarming stories on the ICAN boat involved a father who believed he’d lost the chance to share the joy of swimming with his son after a spinal injury. With the help of the specialized lift and dedicated volunteers, a lost dream became a reality.

This commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the ICAN itself. The ICAN excursion is part of a larger suite of programs under Fishing’s Future, a nonprofit that has taught over 1.3 million people the art of fishing through initiatives like family fish camps, Second Cast Solutions, and mobile fish tank experiences. Every service, including the ICAN trips, is offered completely free of charge, reflecting a belief that the beauty of fishing should be available to every visitor.
